10 Weeks Pregnant Update

Baby is a: Prune

Weight gained: 1 lbs

Total Weight gained: 2 lbs

10 Weeks Pregnant Symptoms: I was sick this week so it was unclear if I felt like crap because of pregnancy or because of being sick with a pretty rough cold.

Cravings: Bread and Sugar. I seriously am in love with Gatorade. I sip it all day. I also want anything carbs. Bagels with butter or jelly are a go to this week along with PB&J sandwiches for lunches.

Aversions: Greasy foods cooked in a lot of oil. One night, everyone had fajitas and the idea of vegetables coated in oil just sounded revolting.

Sleep: I have been needing extra sleep because not only am I sick but so is my toddler, who I still need to take care of. Essentially everyone in our house is sleeping a lot to try to get over this cold.

Excited for: Decorating a nursery again. For Christmas, Cole’s mom brought some of his baby items out for him including a beautiful painted picture on wood and a quilt with bears, which made me start to think of how much fun it is going to be to decorate a nursery again. With L, I went with owls. I am thinking this time I might go with bears so I can incorporate some of these items. And of course, hit up Etsy to find the most unique and adorable items for baby.

Missing: Feeling healthy. Our Christmas guests all flew to our home. Unfortunately, one day after arriving, they were all sick. With L’s 4-month old cousin who still drools over all toys, my toddler was next in line for this lovely bug, followed by me and then my husband.

Movement: No

Dr. Update: My next appointment is next week so I am preparing my questions which include:

  • I crave only breads and sugar and feel my diet is not very healthy, thoughts?
  • Will you be able to hear baby’s heartbeat without an ultrasound?

I also plan to ask for the genetic testing, Counsyl (see How I’m Preparing below for more info).

Exercise: No

Stretch Marks: No

Swelling: No

Maternity Clothing: I bought a belly band and wear that with regular jeans or I wear maternity jeans.

**UPDATE: The belly band didn't last long and wasn't able to add support. I discovered a product from Figure 8 late in my second trimester that I wished I had for my whole pregnancy! It is a belly “wrap". Read more about it and see what it looks like in my 25 week bump update. An absolute must for staying comfortable. I also found that wearing the belly wrap with my maternity jeans helped to keep my maternity jeans up, an issue a lot of pregnant women seem to have.

See my Week 8 update for my Stitch Fix maternity clothing haul.

Labor Signs: No

Wedding Rings On: Yes

Belly Button In or Out: In

How I’m Preparing: I did a lot of research this week on first trimester pre-natal screening. For us, we have two options: (1) Nuchal Translucency Scan (NT Scan) and (2) Counsyl Prelude Prenatal Scan (Genetic Testing). They both look for the same things, chromosomal disorders, but in two different ways. The NT Scan takes measurements of the babies neck on a 12 week ultrasounds and combines those measurements with additional info such as the mother’s age to determine if there may be chromosomal disorders. The genetic test (Counsyl) takes blood from the mother and simply tests it to find disorders in the baby.

I won’t say exactly how old I am 🙂 but I am under 30, meaning these tests aren’t necessarily required/recommended, but Cole and I really want to get one done. Now, I’m not sure what we would do if the results came back with something like Down’s Syndrome, but I’d at least want to know to have the opportunity to think about those impossible decisions.

After looking into each test more thoroughly, we found that because I was under 30 years old, if the NT Scan did come back positive, it would be way more likely that it’d be a false positive than an actual positive result. This would lead to further, more invasive testing to confirm that something was wrong, and would lead to a lot of stress throughout the process. The genetic test (Counsyl) has a much, much lower false positive rate and in the scientific studies where it was tested, it caught every disorder in the babies that were tested. So, it doesn’t miss any positive results, and it very rarely gives false positives. For this reason, we decided to go with Counsyl instead of the NT Scan.

Best Moment of the Week: Telling everyone! We put together Christmas ornaments for both sets of grandparents using the ultrasound pictures. We told Cole’s parents in person and had them unwrap their ornament. We skyped with my parents and showed them their ornament. We then mailed it out to them. Everyone was super excited, and I think a little surprised. I know they all knew we were planning on another kid but maybe didn’t expect it so soon. With L, we actually told my parents in person and Cole’s parents over skype during Christmas, so it’s kind of funny that the due dates lined up so well that we could do it the same way again but in reverse.
