Crib mattresses: how to check fit and product information
Start with the sleep product's instructions, not a list of mattress features. You need to establish which mattress is intended for that product and how it must be used.
If a mattress does not match the product's requirements, extra bedding or an improvised insert is not a solution. Resolve the compatibility question before use.
Read the two sets of information together
Put the crib's mattress requirements beside the candidate mattress's actual dimensions and instructions. Note the model numbers and any restrictions concerning thickness or accessories. For a product supplied with a mattress or pad, do not assume an aftermarket replacement is permitted.

Separate construction claims from suitability
Terms such as premium, natural, breathable, or dual-sided do not answer every question about fit or use. For a dual-sided product, establish which side is intended for the current use and how that is marked. Save the instructions rather than relying on memory when the cover is changed.
The CPSC's crib guidance calls for a firm, tight-fitting mattress. Its safe-sleep guidance also addresses the complete sleep environment. This article does not independently test mattresses or endorse a material as safer than another.
Think through cleaning before there is a spill
Find out which surfaces can be wiped, whether a cover is removable, and how the product must dry. A washable cover is useful only if you can remove, clean, and reinstall it as instructed. Do not introduce unapproved layers to make cleaning easier.

If the original documentation is missing, locate it from the manufacturer using the exact model. A generic online answer about “standard mattress size” is not enough for a specific crib, bassinet, or play yard.
