Baby thermometers: choosing and recording a measurement method

A temperature reading is useful only with context: the child's age, the method used, the actual reading, and how the child is doing. A thermometer's speed or color display does not replace that context.

Ask which method to use before you need it

Have your pediatrician explain the appropriate method for your child's age and what should prompt a call. Follow the device's instructions; this page does not diagnose fever or recommend medication.

Different locations are not interchangeable

The American Academy of Pediatrics explains the differences between rectal, forehead, ear, and oral measurements. It identifies rectal readings as particularly reliable for young infants and says ear thermometers are not reliable below six months. Age, placement, and the environment can affect whether a method is appropriate.

Do not add or subtract an arbitrary number to turn one method into another. Report the number the thermometer displayed and where it was measured. If you repeat a reading, record that separately rather than averaging unlike methods into a single number.

What to check on the actual device

Practical checks before a thermometer is needed
CheckUseful question
Intended measurement siteIs this device intended for the method the pediatrician recommends?
UnitsCan every caregiver tell whether the display is °F or °C?
InstructionsAre placement, cleaning, and any probe-cover requirements clear?
Battery and storageCan you locate the device and check that it powers on?

Use a consistent note when you call

A simple reporting format

“The reading was ___ °F/°C at ___ time, measured using ___ method. My child is ___ old. I am also noticing ___.” Keep any repeat readings separate. Do not enter personal medical information into a public website form.

This format prevents an easy communication mistake: saying only “the thermometer turned red” without the number or method. It also helps another caregiver explain what happened if you are not the person making the call.

Checks are saved only in this browser on this device. They are not sent to Parent.guide. Reset clears this checklist. Without JavaScript, use the written list or print this page.

If your baby seems seriously unwell, get medical help rather than repeatedly checking the device or waiting for a preferred reading. A normal-looking display cannot rule out an illness.
