Breast Pump

Naya breast pump reviews are not very helpful to people looking for new breast pumps, but it can give you information about used models that are available.

Probably the most important decision soon-to-be moms make is how they will feed their babies. While the recommendation from most pediatricians is to breastfeed, there is always the chance a child won’t latch onto their mother’s breast.

Naya breast pump reviews won’t help the decision about how to feed a baby, but some breastfeeding benefits could help some moms decide to breastfeed.

Comparison Table

Top Breastfeeding Benefits for Babies

Some of the benefits that babies get from breastfeeding include:

  • Provides complete nutrition for the first six months of life
  • Provides complete nutrition for the first six months of life
  • Breastfeeding can reduce getting diseases, even later in life
  • Breastfeeding can help babies gain the correct amount of weight
  • Breastfeeding may lead to higher IQs

For women who decide to breastfeed, a breast pump is ideal because it allows them to store the excess milk they may produce for their babies. They can pump whatever their child doesn't consume at their feedings and store it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Storing it allows dads to bond with their sons or daughters by bottle feeding them and caretakers will have what they need on hand when moms go back to work outside of the home. Breast milk can last for four days in a refrigerator or six to 12 months in the freezer.

A variety of breast pumps are available from manual pumps to electric pumps with smartphone apps to track feeding and pumping sessions, milk inventory, and to operate the pumps. One of these electric breast pumps is the Naya Smart Breast Pump.

What is the Naya Smart Breast Pump?

The Naya Smart Breast Pump has gone through some controversies since the company released its smart pump in 2017, including a pricing controversy. However, despite the pricing, the pump did receive many positive reviews due to its portability, quiet operation, and quality.

Unfortunately, Naya Health, the company behind the Naya breast pump, went out of business and the pump is no longer available. However, some retailers that specialize in used baby items and sites like eBay may have used Naya Smart Breast Pumps available, so if you get one, this review can help you understand it better.

How It Works

The Naya pump has a water-based suctioning system that can improve milk production for some women when they’re expressing milk. Warm water needs to go in the BSA tubes because the pump pushes it over the nipples to stimulate expression. Doing this with cold water can be unpleasant for moms who are pumping milk for their child.

Although the pump’s instructions say that the water can last up to two weeks in the tubes, water cools in a short amount of time, and the water needs to be warm whenever pumping. Changing out the water more often means more work, but the benefit is not using cold water to stimulate the nipples, which most women would agree makes it worth the effort.

As the user expresses milk, it travels to containers via tubes that attach to the flanges and runs down to the machine. Since there no bottles that attach to the flanges, the tubes are easy to hide under shirts, blouses, or dresses when women are out in public, so it isn’t too obvious that they are wearing breast pumps.

Wireless Operation

The pump comes with a charger for the pump because it can operate without an electrical cord, so women do not need to be stuck at home or desk when pumping. They can also pump on airplanes or trains while traveling. It operates quietly, so when there is background noise, like the engines on a plane, no one will be able to hear the pump working.Additionally, even without background noise, the sound of it operating can be difficult to detect unless someone is sitting next to a woman who is pumping milk for her baby. Since it is hands-free, the user can talk on the telephone, work on a computer, or take care of her child while expressing milk for their nutritional needs.

Pump Set-up

Setting up the Naya pump can prove difficult for some people because the puck, which creates the pumping action, needs to be set on the motor to power the pump. Also, getting the right amount of water in the BSA tubes can also be a challenge. Fortunately, a how-to video demonstrates how to place the puck on the motor. The video also goes over how much water needs to be in the BSA tubes for the pump to operate correctly. Too much air and there will be too many air pockets in the tubes, and the milk may sputter as it goes into the containers.Sometimes the user may need to massage the tubes to remove excess water, but with practice, moms will learn how much water goes into them and get the right amount in them every time they fill them.

App Operation

The Naya breast pump has a smartphone app that can sync with the pump to keep track of expressing sessions. It keeps track of the length of each session and how much milk she produces from each breast. The app also maintains an inventory of the milk you have in the refrigerator and the freezer so that it can give moms the expiration dates on it.Women can add their nursing sessions to the app to make the milk inventory more accurate. She can also set-up her nursing schedule in it to help the app track her sessions and output. If she feels like the milk is expressing slowly, then the user can increase the suction through the app to make it come out of her breast quicker and shorten the expression stage.

Original Components

Since the Naya is no longer available new, some women may be lucky enough to purchase a used one. Originally the breast came with these components:

  • Smart pump (with battery)
  • Pump Cover
  • Carrying case
  • Two breast shield assemblies (including flange, tubing, and puck to connect to pump base)
  • Two classic bottles with caps, nipples, nipple adapters, and nipple caps
  • Power adapter

How It Compares

Since the Naya Smart Breast Pump is no longer available, that leaves the door wide open for their competitors. While several companies make smart breast pumps, not many of them are hospital grade devices. Those that are include the Medela Sonata, Spectra S2 Plus, and Medela Symphony breast pump.

Medela Sonata Breast Pump

Medela makes several models of breast pumps, including the Sonata, which is a smart breast pump. It is a double breast pump that allows women to pump both breasts at once with what Medela calls their 2-Phase Expression. The technology behind the 2-Phase Expression mimics a baby's suckling by starting quickly to stimulate milk flow and then slowing as the breasts start to express it. It performs like many hospital models do, including the Medela Symphony, which is discussed later in this section. A hospital-grade machine allows multiple women to use it, while a single-use breast pump is meant for use by one person and helps a woman pump milk consistently. So, the Sonata isn’t really hospital-grade, but it does perform similarly to the Symphony, which is a hospital-grade unit. If you take your breast pump to work or are up late at night, the machine runs quietly, so you won’t draw attention to yourself or wake up your family. The Sonata runs at 43.8 dB, while many other breast pumps are louder at 56.2 dB or 58.7 dB. Decibel levels of 43 are very quiet like bird calls, which are 44 dB, and ambient urban sounds are about 40 dB.The Sonata connects to the MyMedela app with Smart Solution, which is available from the Google Play store or Apple Store. This app allows mothers to track their pumping and breastfeeding sessions. It stores information about their babies like their height, weight, diaper changes, and sleep schedule. Plus, the app provides helpful tips and answers questions from parents. The Sonata only weighs about 2.2 pounds out of the package, and it has a one-year limited warranty on the motor and 90 days on other parts.

Spectra S2 Plus Breast Pump

The Spectra S2 Plus is a hospital grade single or double pump that has many features to help the milk stay safe for a baby’s consumption. It is a closed system, so it keeps the tubing dry while pumping milk. It prevents air from getting between the milk and the pump while and the system prevents the milk from backflowing to keep bacteria from contaminating it.The settings on the Spectra are customizable so that each woman can adjust it to her body's reaction to pumping. The suction levels are adjustable, which can make pumping more comfortable on a woman’s nipples. It also has two phase cycling that includes let-down and milk expression. The milk flows from tubes that connect to the flanges to bottles to store the milk. As with many breast pumps, the Spectra operates quietly to prevent from disturbing others in the house when pumping at night. It also doesn’t attract attention when pumping at work or other public places, like an airplane. It operates at 45 dB, which is only slightly louder than a bird’s call. The pump uses lithium metal batteries, so moms don’t need to stay in one place when they are pumping milk. The system is portable so that they can take it with them on vacation, to the office, or on business trips. The bottles and anything that comes in contact with the milk during pumping is from materials that are DEHP, which is a type of phthalate, and BPA-free. The system weighs 3.3 pounds, and the company provides a two-year warranty on the pump from the date of purchase and 90-days on its accessories.

Medela Symphony Breast Pump

When women go to the Medela website to learn more about the Symphony breast pump, the first thing they may notice is that there are power choice options. They can purchase the system that uses only electricity, or they can get one that uses both electricity and has rechargeable batteries. Having the battery makes the system portable so that women can take it anywhere. The Symphony is a true hospital-grade unit as it is designed to last a long time so that multiple women can use it. This breast pump uses Medela’s 2-Phase Expression, which simulates a baby’s suckling to stimulate the milk and get it flowing. When pumping both breasts at once, the 2-Phase technology can produce 18 percent more milk. This breast pump is heavier than other models, so it may be a challenge to take it to work or on a trip. It weighs 8.4 pounds, which is about five pounds more than the Spectra S2 Plus and six pounds more than the Medela Sonata. However, it operates quietly to help ensure discretion when pumping at night or during the day in an office.

The Verdict

If the Naya Smart Breast Pump were available, then we would recommend it due to its benefits and price point.

Used Naya Breast Pumps

While it is a good breast pump that you may be able to find used, without knowing whether the app still works and with no customer support, we don’t recommend buying used machines. Some of the used models that women find on sites like eBay, Craigslist, or from retailers that specialize in used baby equipment may include the instruction manual. However, people rarely keep them, so they may not be available. Getting help for the Naya would be almost impossible to do since the company, Naya Health, shut down. Check for breastfeeding forums for information on the Naya breast pump, or there may be YouTube videos showing how to set it up and operate it. If you buy it from a previous owner, then ask them to demonstrate how to set it up and about pumping with it. Their experience could be invaluable as you use the system. You would also need to manually track feeding and pumping sessions to ensure there is enough milk inventory on hand in the refrigerator or freezer for your needs.

Shopping for New Breast Pumps

Instead of taking your chances with a used Naya Smart Breast Pump, we recommend buying another model, such as the other three we compared to the Naya model. First, decide if you really want to pay for a hospital-grade machine and then research your choices to determine which is the best for your needs. If you’re looking for a model with a smartphone app, then consider the Medela Sonata or any of the other smart breast pumps on the market may be your best choice.
