The Platinum Safemax is part of Evenflo’s line of Safemax car seats. Designed for infants and toddlers alike, the multi-mode car seat grows with your child. It features ample padding, a secure harness, and nifty features that make it a versatile option for any parent.
This is the first car seat from Evenflo to undergo rollover testing, a new innovation from the company. Their goal is to find out how their car seats would function if a crash caused them to roll over. Evenflo’s goal is to create seats that can safely protect their passengers in any situation.
When it comes to child safety seats, knowing the specifications is vital when choosing one that is safe and suitable for your little one. Here are some of the Safemax’s basic specifications:
- Rear-facing weight range: 5-40lbs
- Rear-facing height range: 19-40 inches
- Forward-facing weight range: 22-65lbs
- Forward-facing height range: 28-50 inches
- Harness slot range: 6” to 17”
- Recommended expiration: 10 years
- Lower anchor weight limit: 45lbs
- Width: 21”
- Height: 26”
- Seat pan depth: 14”
- Crotch buckle: 7” without padding
The Platinum Safemax also has a booster mode, effectively turning the car seat into a booster seat. The minimum age for this mode is four years with a max weight of 120lbs and an increased height range of 44” to 57”.
Added safety features include a platinum cover, no rethread harness, and features the company’s new rollover testing. The push on the lower anchor adheres to LATCH guidelines, with the latch also usable in the seat’s booster mode. The rollover testing, however, is a crucial aspect to look at.
Currently, there are no federal standards for this type of test. Car seats must pass an FAA Inversion Standard for safety, but Evenflo takes things a step further by putting their seats through a crash simulation to see how they perform when rolled over. It’s an excellent innovation from the company, but every parent should keep in mind that this safety aspect is not yet federally regulated.
The Safemax Platinum also features Evenflo’s “Outlast” technology, which keeps the cover cool in hot weather. Removable padding helps you find the perfect fit for your child, and two cupholders are excellent spots to place sippy cups and other trinkets.
How it Compares
There’s a lot of competition in the car seat market. Evenflo has top-rated competitors like Safety 1st and Graco to contend with. That competition gives parents the ability to compare specifications and aspects of various models, which is why we pitted the Platinum Safetymax against a few comparable seats.
Evenflo vs. Safety 1st
- Built to grow: The 3 in 1 car seat built to grow for extended use through 3 stages: Rear facing 5 to 40 pounds, forward...
- Side impact protection: The grow and go’s side impact protection helps keep your child safe
- Easy in, easy out: Harness holders keep the harness in an open position so it is easy to get your child in and out of...
Like the Platinum, Safety 1sts Grow and Go offers an interchangeable design that grows with your child. Impact protection ratings are equivalent, with Safety 1st offering a different take on padding that creates thicker cushioning on the headrest.
While the harnesses are different, they both offer simple functionality. It isn’t tough to get your child out of either, but both remain incredibly secure. Rear-facing weight ranges are the same on both models, with Evenflo’s reaching five pounds higher in the front-facing range.
Evenflo vs. Graco
No products found.
Graco’s Extend2Fit model offers the same weight and height ranges as Evenflo’s Platinum Safetymax. In design and functionality, they’re incredibly similar models. Where Graco’s model changes are in the harness design. It isn’t as padded, and it features a latch that sits higher than most other models.
The Extend2Fit is also designed to accompany a child through various stages of life and features a four-position extension panel that provides five extra inches of legroom. This model also features a multi-position headrest and six reclining positions.
While it is similar in design to the Platinum Safetymax, it lacks a few features. Evenflo’s seat offers additional padding on the headrest and an updated LATCH system. Its Outlast performance fabric, designed to keep the seat cool, is also something Draco’s model doesn’t have.
Pros and Cons
No product is entirely a home run, making it crucial that consumers look at the pros and cons before buying. When it comes to the Platinum Safetymax, there’s a lot to love. However, it does have a few downsides.
First, this seat is an excellent fit for small babies and toddlers. Its ability to grow with your child is excellent, and the installation is easy. Features like the seat belt lock off, anti-rebound bar, and Evenflo’s advanced testing make it one of the safest on the market. Plus, it’s lightweight.
When it comes to safety metrics, Evenflo is a step above the rest and continually striving to create higher standards in the industry. Their features are kid and parent-friendly, making the use of their car seats as easy as possible. You’re also paying for quality construction designed to last through the years.
- Excellent fit for small babies
- Seat belt lock off
- Anti-rebound bar
- Exceptional safety testing
Higher safety standards come with a little bit of difficulty. The harness doesn’t loosen like you might expect on similar models, making getting your child in and out a little tough in a pinch. The handle on this model must be all the way down when hooked up to your seat, which leaves slightly less legroom in the front.
This model is not compatible with most strollers since it is designed specifically with car use in mind. Other, less critical cons that customers mentioned were the recline angle indicator being only on one side and only two holes for the crotch and hip adjustments when there are three positions available.
- Some safety features make this less user-friendly
- Less legroom than other models
- Not compatible with most strollers
- Room for improvement in some design areas
After creating this Evenflo Platinum Safemax review, we think this is an excellent purchase. High safety standards and positive feedback from parents are an excellent start, but the culmination of performance and design has led us to believe this car seat is an excellent investment. Here’s why.
First, we do love the safety standards. The fact that Evenflo created a rollover test for this car seat is phenomenal. While it might not be a federally regulated test yet, it’s a step in the right direction for the entire industry. Throw in exceptional crash test ratings, and this is one safe seat.
Second, we think the designs on this seat that grow with your child are some of the best on the market. The adjustments are easy to make, and you can alter everything from height to padding thanks to the versatile build of this seat.
While we did notice that some safety features make this less user-friendly, that’s a hard line to draw. This seat may have drawbacks that make it less than desirable when you’re in a hurry, but would you sacrifice safety for a faster way to get your kid out? Plus, the designs are so simple to use that parents even raved about how easy it was to fasten and unfasten their youngsters. It’s just not a big deal.
In researching for our Evenflo Platinum Safemax review, we did notice that the budget is a little higher than similar car seats. However, this seat retains a higher maximum weight and height thanks to its booster mode. While you might pay more off the bat, the seat will last you longer. That might make it a better investment.
Little features sold us on this model, too. The material used in the construction of the seat’s fabric does an excellent job at regulating heat, keeping your child cool even on hot summer days. The cupholders are just the right size, and the padding is luxurious enough to be part of a home theater setup.
Other little features we liked were the simple ways any parent can adjust the seat. Raising the height, changing from front to rear-facing, and adjusting the LATCH harness is incredibly simple to do. Even the busiest of parents said they found making minor adjustments a breeze.
We think this seat could improve by making it compatible with more strollers. This one is simple to carry thanks to its lightweight design, but that isn’t always plausible on longer trips. Having a little extra legroom would make it more versatile for growing children, too, since no two kids grow alike.
All in all, we feel that this is an excellent choice for a car seat. Supreme safety standards, countless satisfied parents, and little features that make using this model a breeze all helped it become a favorite with us. We think you’ll enjoy this seat as much as the parents whose reviews we read do, and we think your child will love it too.
